They’re Back!

Writer's picture: Melissa WashburnMelissa Washburn

Almost ten years ago I created an illustration of the proverb “How Do You Eat an Elephant? One Bite at a Time.” My father had been ill, and in and out of the hospital, and my stepmother quoted it one day when we were all gathered together talking… it’s about realizing that it’s a marathon, not a sprint; doing the small things one at a time, day by day, to get through a difficult time, to reach a lofty goal. It became the first of a series of images I created but none was ever as popular as my elephant. Fast forward to now. I look back at that piece I created way back when and all I can see is crooked lettering, sloppy painting, and something that doesn’t look at all like what I’m making now. I stopped selling it a coupe of years ago, both because I grew frustrated at how often the image was being stolen, and also because I started to be less-than-happy with it. But I still get inquiries via my Etsy shop fairly often about when or if it will be available again. So I knew it had struck a chord with people. Finally this month I finished a new version and had some prints made. Here are the original and the updated version side by side. I’ve already been informed that some people like the “old” one better. That’s fine, but I’m going to put the one that feels right to me out into the world.

Prints are available in my Etsy shop in several sizes

Upcoming Classes and Events

<p>I&#8217;m really excited to start the new year with some fun things already on the calendar. Starting on March 7, I will be teaching a weekly linocut printmaking class at the Chesterton Art Center.
